Operation Elgin Homefront & Salvation Army Donations at Downtown Elgin’s Window Wonderland

In conjunction with Downtown Elgin’s 11th Annual Window Wonderland, Operation Elgin Homefront and the Salvation Army will be collecting donations for military personal and local civilians on Saturday, December 12, 11am – 5pm. Enjoying local business specials and unique attractions already at Window Wonderland, families will have the opportunity to give donations at various drop-off locations in the Downtown vicinity.

Operation Elgin Homefront is a partnership between Books at Sunset, the American Legion Post 57 and the VFW Post 1307 to engage a new generation in sustaining the troops overseas via communications and hard-to-find supplies. The hope is that soldiers stationed overseas, under physical duress with many experiencing financial, as well as family sacrifices, would beyond a doubt, realize their own community, young and old, remembers. On December 12, along with collection boxes, monetary donations can be made at Mad Maggie’s (51 South Grove) where there will be WW II themed music and performances, as well as an area for card & letter writing and creating snowflakes for all ages. There will also be an “Overseas Soldier’s Wish List” up in S. Grove window at Mad Maggie’s over the Thanksgiving holiday and will be on the Downtown Neighborhood Association’s website, http://www.downtownelgin.org/ after December 1. For further info contact Books at Sunset at 847.888.1860.

Also on December 12, in Downtown Elgin, the Salvation Army will have 20 large red collection cans at various passport stops in Downtown Elgin for the public to donate unwrapped new toys for children twelve and under, along with non perishable canned or boxed food from 11am – 5pm. Their canteen, serving hot chocolate and Sanfillipo nuts, will be located on the corner of South Grove Avenue and Fulton Street, their collection kettle near the Reindeer in the Civic Center Parking Lot, and their Brass quartet will be playing at the Gail Borden Public Library from 2-4pm. For more information call the Downtown Neighborhood Association office at 847.488.1456.
