MELODICROCKFEST 2
Coming to The Roadhouse/Main Event Elgin
April 30-May 2
Some of the biggest and best names in melodic rock will once again gather for the biggest party of the year when MELODICROCKFEST 2 comes to Downtown Elgin for the weekend of April 30-May 2.
Hosted by THE ROADHOUSE at 200 Prairie Street in Elgin, MelodicRockFest 2 is the second major concert event organized by the popular hard rock website http://www.melodicrock.com/ - one of the most respected and leading music websites in the world, tallying 42 million hits and currently servicing 275,000 unique users per month.
Spread over two full days (Saturday May 1 and Sunday May 2); with an additional VIP ticket holder night on Friday April 30; the event will feature 20 bands and additional special guests in a display of classic melodic and hard rock music.
Here is the weekend rundown:
FRIDAY, APRIL 30
The Friday VIP Meet & Greet night is open to VIP ticket holders and will feature some acoustic performances from more melodic rock stars.
Headlining the night will be a rare special 30-minute set from ALIAS, featuring vocalist Freddy Curci and guitarist Steve DeMarchi.
Chicagoland rockers MECCA made an immediate impact with their debut album in 2000, but has never played live – until now. This will be a very special set not to be missed.
ROCK SUGAR couldn’t help but get involved again and will warm up for Saturday with some acoustic tracks.
And joining us again from MRF1 is US melodic rock band GOODBYE THRILL, who might just ignore the acoustic night premise to deliver some rocking tunes.
A number of the weekend guests will be on hand to meet and greet fans, sign autographs or possibly share a drink or two.
SATURDAY, MAY 1
Saturday’s show will be headlined by San Francisco hard rock legends Y&T. The band will be taking a break from the studio, preparing the release of their new studio album due mid-year to rock Chicago.
DANGER DANGER is one of the most popular hard rock acts to come out of the late '80s and in 2009 the band delivered one of the genre’s best new albums. They’ll be playing all their biggest hits and some new tracks too.
PRIDE OF LIONS needs no introduction – featuring Chicago’s favourite rock legend Jim Peterik (ex-Survivor, Ideas Of March, World Stage) and vocalist Toby Hitchcock, plus members of the World Stage band, Pride Of Lions will appear for one of their rare live appearances.
EDEN’S CURSE features members from 4 different countries, but they will converge on the USA for the very first time to perform the best tracks from two acclaimed albums and maybe even preview the upcoming third opus. And they’ll record and film the set for a DVD release!
TERRY BROCK has been in the business for 20 years and is the current lead vocalist for much loved AOR act Giant and classic rock band Le Roux. But Terry has a solo career also and in his feature set, he will cover all the favourites and perhaps a surprise or two. His backing band will be popular New York melodic rockers Valentine.
ROCK SUGAR might just be one of the most talked about bands of the weekend. Their unique take on twisting songs into each other, or ‘mashing them’ together will have everyone talking. Fast becoming a YouTube sensation with their Metallica/Journey mash-up, these guys are going to rock the house.
US rockers TALON are another band bubbling under and will debut their new vocalist and film a live DVD at the same time.
Opening the day is FARCRY – a band with the attitude of any stadium act of the '80s.
SUNDAY, MAY 2
Headlining Day 2 of MelodicRockFest is multi-platinum rockers WINGER. Famed for their musical prowess and fresh off a European tour, the band are supporting the release of their latest hard rock masterpiece Karma.
For the first time in 14 years, acclaimed NJ rockers TRIXTER will return to the mid-west to perform a true greatest hits set as they continue the tour that commemorates the 20th Anniversary of their debut album.
Pulling double duty for the show is Danger Danger frontman TED POLEY. Ted will do his own set, concentrating on some D2 rarities and solo material, plus tunes from his Poley/Rivera release. Ted will be joined by guitarist Vic Rivera and band.
JIMI JAMISON (ex-Survivor) returns from a guest appearance that brought the house down at MRF1 to perform a solo set of new solo tracks and some much loved Survivor classics. Who knows what guests might join him on stage?
VOICES OF ROCK RADIO are just that. Kevin Chalfant (The Storm, Two Fires) and Derek St. Holmes (Ted Nugent) and the Two Fires Band perform their best known hits before inviting former Survivor vocalist Jimi Jamison to join the fun.
CROWN OF THORNS, featuring Jean Beauvoir and Tommy Lafferty will play a rare US soil live show in support of their latest studio album and a catalogue of much loved tunes that go back to the Paul Stanley (Kiss) produced debut album.
No Chicago based show would be complete without local legends 7TH HEAVEN – the hardest working band in the Midwest and recently featured on American Idol.
Opening up Day 2 is melodic hard rockers BOMBAY BLACK, a heavy duty live act that will get the day off to a thunderous start.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers - 6pm
The Flying Karamazov Brothers, named after the novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, are a continuing experiment in comedy, theatre, music and, of course, juggling. With the intention of blending the worlds of performance art, improvisation, word play, harmony, emotion and, above all, virtuosity into a unique form of theatre and entertainment, the Flying Karamazov Brothers continue to find new ways to astonish by air, by laughs and by scene. Taking their cue from Shakespeare, they bring art and accessible entertainment to the stage. Comedy is their bread and butter and they layer it on so that children of 2, or 92 will laugh at the same moment for very different reasons. Among their many accomplishments, the Flying Karamazov Brothers have won an Obie Award, and were America’s representatives of classical theatre at the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles. In 2004, the Flying Karamazov Brothers were honored with an award of excellence by the International Juggling Association.
"4PLAY" is the latest show by the Flying Karamazov Brothers.
This original production is directed by Paul Magid. The show is a unique blend of nouveau cirque, visual music, dance and theatre.
Tickets on sale now at The Hemmens Box Office! Golden Circle: $50 ~ Premium: $30 ~ Main Floor: $25 ~ Balcony: $15

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About the Speaker: Jan Kostner
Deputy Director
Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Tourism
As deputy director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Tourism (IBOT), Jan V. Kostner spearheads the state’s tourism industry marketing and development efforts, contributing to sustainable and significant economic and quality-of-life benefits for Illinois residents. Her direction has helped Illinois achieve outstanding state tourism records, with nearly 91 million domestic visitors and more than 1 million international visitors spending more than $24 billion on transportation, lodging, food, entertainment, recreation and incidentals in 2004.
Kostner has implemented a wide array of successful state tourism initiatives since her appointment in March 2003, including the creation and launch of “Illinois. Mile After Magnificent Mile,” the state’s new brand positioning--a fresh approach that has eclipsed awareness levels achieved by previous campaigns in its first year alone. She spearheaded the communications effort for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum opening in April 2005, positioning the museum and city of Springfield as a premier tourist destination. The effort generated national and international media attention and attracted more than 500,000 visitors in the first year alone. She also led the redesign and relaunch of the Illinois Web site, enjoyillinois.com, along with various niche sites that serve the sports, group tour and meeting planning industries in Illinois, to more effectively meet the needs of the changing tourism marketplace.
To help improve the state’s economic returns, Kostner makes it a priority to travel throughout Illinois on a regular basis to partner with tourism industry professionals in the development of tourism infrastructure and opportunities. These efforts have supported major tourism development and attractions statewide, including the internationally celebrated Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield and the unveiling of Jane, a rare juvenile T-Rex, in Rockford. Also under her tutelage, IBOT has implemented innovative partnerships, such as that with industry leader Expedia, that increase Illinois’ exposure nationally and directly impact travel bookings.
Kostner also oversees IBOT’s grant program, through which the Bureau returns approximately half of its overall budget to Illinois organizations and communities each year. During her tenure, IBOT has provided grants to help a variety of Illinois tourism groups succeed, including the Western Illinois Regional Tourism Development Office to help implement the Illinois Great Rivers Bike Ride; the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association to support marketing activities increasing awareness of Illinois as a premier wine-producing state and tourist destination; and the Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau to help implement a tourism management associate’s degree program at John A. Logan Community College.
Prior to joining IBOT, Kostner was a senior vice president for Chicago-based public affairs and strategic communications firm Jasculca/Terman, where she was responsible for strategic planning, new client development and company marketing. While there, her accomplishments included overseeing event marketing for various high-profile corporate, non-profit and government clients, for which she earned several industry awards, including five Publicity Club of Chicago Golden Trumpets.
Kostner holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from New England College in Henniker, N.H. She resides in Chicago.

5,000 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP PACKAGE
ONE MILLION MEALS FOR HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS
(ELGIN, IL — Feb. 11, 2010) -- The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers to help package one million meals for survivors of the January 12 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The Army is partnering with the City of Elgin and Elgin-area businesses to package meal ingredients, which include rice, soy protein, freeze-dried vegetables, and 21 vitamins and minerals, for shipment to Haiti.
Approximately 5,000 volunteers are needed for the two-day food packaging event, to be held Saturday and Sunday, February 20 and 21, at the former Seigle’s Home and Building Center, 1600 Big Timber Road in Elgin. Saturday hours are 9 AM to 6 PM; Sunday hours are 1 PM to 6 PM.
Residents who can donate two hours of their time on either day should visit www.salarmyelgin.org to register. Registration is required, since it may not be possible to accommodate volunteers who show up the day of the event. We also request help for meeting local needs. Please bring canned food to donate to the food pantry that is supporting 160-200 families every Friday in Elgin. A canned food drop box will be present at this event.
The Salvation Army has had a presence in Haiti since 1950, with more than 700 Army officers and staff operating schools, clinics, a hospital, children’s homes and feeding programs.
The United Nations has designated The Salvation Army as the “lead agency” responsible for the care of 20,000 earthquake survivors living in makeshift tents or out in the open near the Army’s main compound in Port-au-Prince. The Army is providing food, water and medical services to this group.

DNA 2010 Social Promo to Launch January 11
During the week of January 11-17, the DNA will launch an all-social media promotion for downtown businesses.
The promotion features offers that are combinations of 2010. For example, 2 dinner entrees for $20.10. Or $2 off a purchase of $10 or more.
The promotion is being pushed solely through social media, starting here with this blog post, continuing through Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, and going, well, as far as the social media world wants to take it.
We will post the 2010 offers on January 11. DNA blog followers, Facebook fans and Twitter followers will be the first to see the promotions!
Here’s how it works:
- Become a DNA Facebook Fan, Twitter Follower or Foursquare User*** (fans and followers will get updates on specials throughout the week)
- Share the great deals with your friends, fans and followers through your own social networks.
- Visit as many of the participating businesses during the week of January 11-17 as you can cram in.
- Be sure to mention to the business owner, clerk or server where you heard about the offer.
- Post your feedback about where you went and your experience there via social media using #DNA2010. All those who post comments using this hashtag will be entered in a drawing to win a Rediscover Downtown Elgin t-shirt. We will announce the 3 winners via social media on 01/20/10 at 10AM!
Be a part of our social media experiment, explore Downtown Elgin and ring in the new year with great deals and specials!
*** Never heard of Foursquare? It's a location based social network to let others in your network know where you are (only when you want them to know). You get points for check-ins, unlock badges for visiting certain businesses (e.g. gyms, restaurants, bars) and can obtain "mayorship" by checking in at a location two times. Downtown Elgin consumers can check in at the participating businesses to unlock secret discounts only available to Foursquare users.

Window Wonderland (& All of its Offerings) Tomorrow!
I have found that there are three kinds of people that will attend this event...
First type, has probably already mapped out the attractions they want to see, the specific time entertainment is showing(like Books at Sunset's Polar Express at 2pm), is having lunch and dinner in Downtown Elgin (even made reservations), and will probably shop while their husband takes the kids to see one of the animal attractions (sledding dogs, live nativity, reindeer) for the third time.
Second type, has to see a little bit of everything and will not only go to Window Wonderland, but will go to the Kim's Black Belt Academy breakfast 9-11am, will donate a toy and canned food to Salvation Army in their bright red collection barrels, eat lunch in Downtown, go on the NENA House Tour, will grab a coffee, finish Window Wonderland with their picture of Santa, have dinner, and then go to the Elgin Symphony's night concert.
Third type, will decide to come last minute, be surprised all that is hiding in Downtown Elgin at 30 passport stops, 10 extra attractions, 41 windows in the Window Wonderland contest, and will probably make some impulse buys, along with great buys and specials through the various discounts being offered by retailers and restaurants. (Check out the passport link for more info)
Whichever one you are, I can't wait to all types tomorrow on a thirty something degree weather with some sun!!

Downtown Sidewalk Snow Removal
Downtown Sidewalk Snow Removal
Dear Downtown Property/Business Owners,
As the forecast is calling for snow over the next few days, please be advised that the City's downtown sidewalk snow removal services will be reduced for 2009-2010.
Downtown property/business owners are responsible for clearing snow from their sidewalks and piling it on the curbline (not in the street). The City will remove the mounds of snow at the curb as time allows. The City plans to use restitution workers to assist in downtown snow removal when possible.
The City will continue to clear sidewalks adjacent to City properties, in the City parks, across the bridges, and at handicapped crosswalks, as well as sidewalks in front of vacant properties.
Thank you for your cooperation. Together, we can continue to keep Downtown Elgin looking great for the holiday season.
If you are in need of a shovel, shop local at Ace Hardware at the corner of Spring and Kimball.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have put together a short list of snow removal service companies in Elgin who have the capabilities, availability and equipment to handle downtown sidewalk/alley snow removal in the case that you need it. The list was compiled by referrals from property owners/managers.
I have called each of these companies to verify their capabilities and to make sure that they are licensed and insured. All are open to giving multi-business discounts.
